There is Hope
Yet, deep within me
Resides a place of great light
Balancing darkness

The Effect of Music
Listening to the music
I try to linger on each note
But the next forces me forward
Keeping me in the moment

My Sun is Setting
A brilliant light
Blinds my eyes
But warms my decaying soul
I am dying
I do not ask for redemption
I have lived a just life
I have not repented for my sins
There are no such things
I have answered to myself, always
I have forgiven myself, daily
If there is a God that lives within me
Then I have done right in this world
And if there is not
Then no amount of last-minute gestures
Will help me pass or ease my pain
I cross-over with peace in my heart
Ready to live and love again

Growing Up
For years my mind ruled me
Kept itself busy with thought
Ran wild with what ifs, if onlys,
Should haves
Unchecked
I could spend hours sitting and thinking
About a single situation
That had not yet occurred
Obsessing
Carrying on conversations
With someone who was not with me
Present
Angry about what they might say
Arguing
I am in the process of putting that person away
The brain is not as smart as it thinks it is
Living a conscience life begets wisdom
And that resides in the heart

Soul Searching
Who are you?
Do you know?
Have you looked inside
To see if you can see?
Who you are is there
You are not what you show
To the World through your skin
Nor are you who your ego tells you to be
You can see your spirit within
If you are brave enough to look
The idea scares you
You have so much tucked away
You keep yourself hidden
Not from others
Not from the ones you love
But from yourself
Your spirit leaks into the world
And reveals your nature, your truth
Many others see this around you, diluted
You can see it in full vibrancy when you look inside
Look first to your heart
It has something to say
Hear it speak to you
Receive its message
Look next to the brain
Find the contradictions
Note them, they are the fallacies
Let them drop away
Now who are you?
Are you who you thought you were?

Long Time Coming
I am changing
I used to be like a patio umbrella
Left open in high winds
Rigid and stretched thin
Reacting violently to outside forces
I have recently remembered
To close that umbrella
When I am not using it
Or when a storm is coming in
I now let the wind flow around me
Leaving little for it catch and pull
Because I have finally realized
I cannot stop the wind from blowing
I am changing

Facing the Sonnet Head-on
Fearless in facing the endeavor, the poet begins the rhyme
Confronting a formidable challenge, begins to rack the mind
Never before having been successful, vows to finish this time
Trying to unravel ideas the ego had tried to bind
Gray matter is loosening up now, beginning to find a flow
Sticking a meter and cadence like a gymnast landing a roll
Self confidence growing by bounds, the poet did not even know
By working an ancient form the poet could feed the soul
Freedom from within the confines, the metaphor begins to sing
A chorus of a single voice, harmonizing, with self, within
Stunned by the resonating timbre that is beginning to ring
The poet remembers to breathe, as the head is starting to spin
Drawing a single breath in, the mist formed, now simply clears away
Success in writing the sonnet, the poet will live one more day

A Lesson for my Children
I want to impart to you
What others see you do
Will be applied to there own values
To create a perceived identity
I need to instill in you
The importance of being true
And manifesting your personal view
Within your own reality

The Talking Dog
My dog speaks with her tail
Especially when I
Stop petting her

and yet
I am trying not to think about
The way the World now is
I do not want to give it
Any of my energy
Even with all of the hope
Our new President does bring
Singing of the possibility of
Rebuilding humanity
Yet in the face of this
I have not heard him utter
The solitary idea I think
Could make this a reality
For the human race
To truly love mankind
He must repeal the right of personhood
Bestowed upon corporate entities
