Soul Searching
Who are you?
Do you know?
Have you looked inside
To see if you can see?
Who you are is there
You are not what you show
To the World through your skin
Nor are you who your ego tells you to be
You can see your spirit within
If you are brave enough to look
The idea scares you
You have so much tucked away
You keep yourself hidden
Not from others
Not from the ones you love
But from yourself
Your spirit leaks into the world
And reveals your nature, your truth
Many others see this around you, diluted
You can see it in full vibrancy when you look inside
Look first to your heart
It has something to say
Hear it speak to you
Receive its message
Look next to the brain
Find the contradictions
Note them, they are the fallacies
Let them drop away
Now who are you?
Are you who you thought you were?

Reading into What is not Said
Tell Me
Communicate
Don’t shut me out again
I am feeling oh so helpless
Lonely
It’s me
I know it’s me
That is why you won’t talk
You are afraid you will hurt me
You won’t
You won’t
Unless you go
Do not leave me alone
I love you deeply, you know I
Need you
Tell me
I can take it
I can’t take your silence
Your secrecy is killing me
I ache
Say it
You don’t love me
You never have loved me
My heart is broken, my soul too
Just go

Misguided Quatrain
I’ve been down so many times
And for so long at a go
Happiness, it seemed to me
Was something that only the sky knows

Long Time Coming
I am changing
I used to be like a patio umbrella
Left open in high winds
Rigid and stretched thin
Reacting violently to outside forces
I have recently remembered
To close that umbrella
When I am not using it
Or when a storm is coming in
I now let the wind flow around me
Leaving little for it catch and pull
Because I have finally realized
I cannot stop the wind from blowing
I am changing

Loving Carelessly
I am said to where my heart my sleeve
But I see that as an admirable thing
You always know where you stand
When I am loving you
And that can truly be a blessing
And because my heart is in plain view
That saves me from having to say
I love you
Facing the Sonnet Head-on
Fearless in facing the endeavor, the poet begins the rhyme
Confronting a formidable challenge, begins to rack the mind
Never before having been successful, vows to finish this time
Trying to unravel ideas the ego had tried to bind
Gray matter is loosening up now, beginning to find a flow
Sticking a meter and cadence like a gymnast landing a roll
Self confidence growing by bounds, the poet did not even know
By working an ancient form the poet could feed the soul
Freedom from within the confines, the metaphor begins to sing
A chorus of a single voice, harmonizing, with self, within
Stunned by the resonating timbre that is beginning to ring
The poet remembers to breathe, as the head is starting to spin
Drawing a single breath in, the mist formed, now simply clears away
Success in writing the sonnet, the poet will live one more day

A Lesson for my Children
I want to impart to you
What others see you do
Will be applied to there own values
To create a perceived identity
I need to instill in you
The importance of being true
And manifesting your personal view
Within your own reality

The Talking Dog
My dog speaks with her tail
Especially when I
Stop petting her

On Feeling Empathy
When I say I empathize
I do not always mean
That I simply understand
What you are going through
When I say that I feel you
I am not speaking to
A tactile sense about your skin
Or the softness of your clothes
When I say I empathize
I often mean that
I feel your emotions
As if they were my own
When I say that I feel you
What I am probably saying to you
Is that I feel your life force
Your soul, your energy
If I say that I understand
I am then relating
I get the ideas you put forth or
I have been through that too
